Slip These Habits into Your Programme!

Now this will improve your health and metabolism EVEN IF you’re at your optimum weight.

I first wrote this summary for a wheatgrass client who needed to lose weight and yes! it works! It’s less of a “diet” and more of a lifestyle change.

That was almost two years ago and though I no longer sell wheatgrass, I promise you, it’s ‘good stuff’.

Adapted from Ultrametabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman:

LOSING WEIGHT NATURALLY:

EAT FOODS IN THEIR NATURAL STATES, AVOID CHEMICALS AND PRESERVATIVES, HYDROGENTATED OILS OR TRANS FATS AND SUGARS, PRACTICE READING LABELS

CUT BACK ON ALL FLOUR, RICE AND PASTA

MOST OF THE WHOLEWHEAT BREAD ON THE MARKET HAS VERY LITTLE WHOLEWHEAT!

THE ROUGH HUSKY RICE IS MORE EXPENSIVE BUT IT IS THE BEST!

BREAKFAST:

ALWAYS EAT BREAKFAST! Or else your metabolism will be slower all day long and you will eat more.

INCLUDE PROTEIN IN YOUR BREAKFAST: eggs, cheese, meat, fish, lentils, red beans, nuts with your porridge.

PROTEIN prevents carbohydrate cravings that encourage you to eat more of the wrong foods.

Don’t exercise on an empty stomach, it puts you in starvation mode, slowing your metabolism.

FIBER:

Vegetables or fruit or peas and beans and nuts should be included in every snack or meal. This also helps to balance metabolism, reduce cravings and promote a feeling of fullness.

These types of foods are rich in minerals and proteins as well as vitamins.

OMEGA FATTY ACIDS:

Esp found in almonds, walnuts, fish, flax seeds and flax seed oils.

These help speed up metabolism too.

What slows your metabolism?

  • Sugar, flour, pasta
  • Not enough fibre
  • Trans fatty acids as in soy bean oil and A LOT OF SNACK FOODS AND CEREALS
  • TRANS FATTY ACIDS ARE THE SAME AS HYDROGENATED AND PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED OILS
  • Beware of High Fructose Corn Syrup

This is found in many things including GATORADE, Ketchup, lots of the juices on the market AND MANY SNACKS AND CEREALS ADVERTISED TO BE HEALTHY.

It wreaks havoc on your metabolism, WORSE THAN SUGAR. Manufacturers use it because it is cheaper.

ALL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SPEEDS UP YOUR METABOLISM. ENGAGE IN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE:

Move at every opportunity. Those with desk jobs benefit from getting up often.

Good exercises include gentle ones such as yoga, vigorous ones such as swimming and cycling or spin at the gym. Weight bearing exercises strengthen muscles, bones and joints.

All exercise done SAFELY is good. Get professional advice to ensure you are exercising correctly and safely if you need to jog, be in a gym or take up a new sport. Even yoga and pilates require correct method to ensure safety.

Find a way and get moving!

PS it’s better for your body if you DO NOT EXERCISE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING ON AN EMPTY STOMACH!

(well okay that’s Dr. Hyman’s opinion, I know that’s debated my experts!)

READ ULTRAMETABOLISM BY DR. MARK HYMAN to debunk lots of myths on fat, starvation diet and the French paradox and understanding the keys to better metabolism including the importance of exercise, keeping your thyroid and liver in tip-top shape and stress management.

He also focuses on detecting common food intolerances. Many of us are consuming wheat, corn, eggs, peanuts, dairy and have not caught on to the fact that one or more of these “healthy foods” doesn’t agree with us. But that’s another subject.

Here is some scary stuff worth reading:  http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/12/29/The-7-Foods-Experts-Wont-Eat.aspx

You will think about milk, potatoes, canned foods and organic foods differently after reading this article by Dr. Mercola. Too much strategizing just to eat food? That’s a cop out. It’s our responsibility to be informed and then put pressure on governments and market forces for change. The reason trans fats are now labeled and there are more organic foods available in the USA is BECAUSE people have learned, yelled and rebelled.

The trouble is the labels “No Trans Fats” can be deceptive, but that’s a story for another time!
